Steven Young   (TOP)

A native resident of Collingwood, Ontario Stephen Young has been involved in the golf course construction and design business for the past twenty years. Stephen spent the first part of his career shaping some of Canada's top golf courses, predominately under the directorship of golf designer Thomas McBroom. Stephen's dynamic shaping work can be discovered on such courses as The Links of Crowbush Cove, which achieved the Golf Digest's prestigious "Best New Canadian Course" award, as well as many of Ontario's "local" favorites, such as Monterra and Cranberry golf courses in Collingwood, along with Deer Ridge, Diamond in the Rough, Hockley Valley, Deerhurst Lakeside and many more.

Years of shaping golf courses allowed Stephen to understand the intricacies of design work, as well as the importance of the natural environment in which he worked. Not surprisingly, Stephen was compelled to open his own design company, S. Young Design Inc. Immediate recognition of his design expertise and environmental conscientiousness was noted in both Grey Silo in Waterloo achieving "Top Ecology", "Most Scenic" and "Best New Municipal Golf Course", and Batteaux Creek outside of Collingwood achieving the "Environmental" award.

Stephen's construction and shaping background makes him a unique architect. Notables in the golf industry have remarked that "he designs with a builders mind and builds with a designers mind." This dual aptitude for design results in a stimulating strategic golf experience that serves to challenge and intrigue players of all levels. His countless trips to study the works of some of the greatest golf architects, such as Pete Dye, Tom Fazio and Jack Nicklaus, has allowed Stephen to integrate the most renowned golf stratagems of the past few centuries into his design work.

Stephen is one of the most technically advanced designers in the region. He has mastered the ability to calculate quantities on the fly for every area of the project he is designing, as well as produce the completed project design in realistic 3D images in order to guarantee precision before they are taken to the field. The use of Real Time GPS technology enables Stephen Young to ensure that all aspects of his design can be seamlessly actualized on the ground.

Stephen Young’s combined twenty years of study and experience has allowed him to become an innovative leader in environmental golf course design without sacrificing his unique artistic visions of the land. With each project he effectively balances the environmental requirements, the strategic elements, and the artistic shaping of the course itself.
